An exhibition of paintings by Alexander Sádlo

Held between September 24th 2025 to December 14th 2025 in the foyer of the New Stage.

This was the first in a three year series of exhibitions and events in the run up to the centenary of Alex’s birth.

Return of the painter to Plzeň, where his art career began

In a three-year programme sponsored by the City of Plzen, Pilsen Region, Western Bohemia, Czech Republic, and the Ministry of Culture, the art of Alex Sádlo (1927-2021) was brought back to Plzen, where, in 1943-45, he worked as an apprentice set painter for the DJKT Grand Theatre. His art will be shown in three major venues: The DJKT New Stage in Plzen 2025, Nebílovy State Castle 2026, and Gallery Klatovy 2027 (the centenary of his birth).  


  • Project Author and Management: Dr Martin Otava, Director of the Josef Kajetán Tyl Theatres, Pilsen (including gallery in the New Stage)
  • Curator and author: Dr Michal Zachař, esteemed curator, author, (including catalogues) and (for example) of “Light in the Picture- Czech Impressionism” Prague Castle.  
  • Loan of works and project collaborator: Professor Dr Gaynor Sádlo, ceramic artist working with Alexander Sádlo’s designs.
